Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas

Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas is the S.K. and Angela Chan Professor of Global Management in the Department of Economics and the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley, and Director of the Clausen Center. Between 2022 and 2026, he was Economic Counsellor and Director of Research (Chief Economist) of the International Monetary Fund.

Gourinchas's research focuses on international macroeconomics and finance, including global imbalances, the international monetary system, the role of the U.S. dollar, and geoeconomic fragmentation. He was awarded the 2007 Bernácer Prize for the best European economist under 40 in macroeconomics and finance, and the 2008 Prix du Meilleur Jeune Économiste.

Gourinchas was founding editor-in-chief of the IMF Economic Review (2009–2016), co-editor of the American Economic Review (2019–2022), and director of the NBER International Finance and Macroeconomics Program (2017–2022). He is a CEPR Research Fellow and a Fellow of the Econometric Society. In 2012–2013, he served on the French Council of Economic Advisors to the Prime Minister.

Gourinchas taught at Stanford Graduate School of Business and Princeton University before joining UC Berkeley in 2003. He studied at the École Polytechnique and received his PhD in Economics from MIT in 1996.
