In 2024, at the request of the European Commission, he published "The future of European competitiveness", a detailed blueprint for reversing Europe's economic decline that has become the main reference in EU competitiveness debates.

He was previously a full professor at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. His research has appeared in the top journals in economics, including the American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy, Quarterly Journal of Economics and Review of Economic Studies.

Marta Garayoa is Chief Operating Officer of the Rhine Group, where she leads operations, communications, and the organisation’s public-facing activities. Before joining the Group, she spent nearly nine years at NTT DATA, a Japanese technology and consulting company, including as Global Sustainability Head of Marketing and Communication. In 2022 she founded Metaprosa, a non-profit cultural centre that promotes Spanish literature and cultural exchange.
