Moritz Schularick

Moritz Schularick has been President of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy since June 2023 and is Professor of Economics at Kiel University and Sciences Po (Paris). He is a Research Fellow at the CEPR, a Fellow of the DFG-Excellence Cluster ECONtribute, and a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Academia Europaea.

Schularick works in macrofinance, financial stability, international economics, and economic history. His work with Òscar Jordà and Alan Taylor on credit cycles has provided the backdrop for macroprudential policies aimed at curbing credit booms; their paper "Credit Booms Gone Bust" ranks among the most cited in macroeconomics of the past decade.

Previously, Schularick was Professor of Macroeconomics at the University of Bonn (2012–2023) and Director of the MacroFinance Lab. He held visiting positions at Cambridge University and NYU Stern, and served as Assistant Vice President at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (2020–2021).

He received the Leibniz Prize (2022), Germany's most important research prize, and the Gossen Prize of the German Economic Association (2018). He holds a PhD in Economics (summa cum laude) from the Freie Universität Berlin and an MSc from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
