Markus K. Brunnermeier
Markus K. Brunnermeier is the Edwards S. Sanford Professor of Economics at Princeton University and Director of Princeton's Bendheim Center for Finance. His research focuses on resilience, international financial markets, monetary theory, and macroeconomics, with special emphasis on bubbles, liquidity, financial crises, and digital money.
He served as President of the American Finance Association in 2023 and is a non-resident senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. He is a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, the Centre for Economic Policy Research, CESifo, and ABFER, and a member of the Bellagio Group on the International Economy. He advises the US Congressional Budget Office, the Bank for International Settlements, the Bank of Japan, and the Deutsche Bundesbank, and has previously advised the International Monetary Fund, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and the European Systemic Risk Board.
He is a Fellow of the Econometric Society, a Sloan Research Fellow, and a Guggenheim Fellow, and a recipient of the Germán Bernácer Prize for outstanding contributions in macroeconomics and finance. He has served as an associate editor of the American Economic Review, the Journal of Finance, the Review of Financial Studies, and the Journal of the European Economic Association.
His books include The Resilient Society (2021; second edition 2026, Yale University Press), A Crash Course on Crises (Princeton University Press, 2023, with Ricardo Reis), The Euro and the Battle of Ideas (Princeton University Press, 2016, with Harold James and Jean-Pierre Landau), and Asset Pricing under Asymmetric Information (Oxford University Press, 2001). He also hosts Markus' Academy, a webinar series on economics and finance.
Brunnermeier holds a PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science (1999), was part of the European Doctoral Program at the University of Bonn and holds an MA from Vanderbilt University. He received an honorary doctorate from his undergraduate university, the University of Regensburg, in 2022.
