Luis Garicano

Luis Garicano is a Spanish economist and Professor of Public Policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science. His research focuses on how organisation and technology shape productivity and economic growth. From 2019 to 2022 he served as a Member of the European Parliament.

Garicano studies how organisation and technology shape productivity, wage distribution, and economic growth. His research focuses on the interaction between technology and organisational change as a driver of productivity — a framework he has applied to digital technologies from e-commerce to AI. More recently, he has studied how to design better institutions in Europe to prevent future crises in the Eurozone.

In the European Parliament, Garicano served as Vice-President of the Renew Europe group, responsible for economic affairs. He helped draft the legislation for the Recovery and Resilience Facility and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, and led his group's efforts on Russian sanctions and aid to Ukraine, travelling to Lviv and Kyiv twice in the first two months of the war.

Earlier in his career, he was a full professor at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and taught at MIT and Columbia. He is also a Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), Europe's leading economics research network.

Garicano holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Chicago. His research has appeared in the top journals in economics, including the American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy, Quarterly Journal of Economics and Review of Economic Studies. He has also contributed to the Financial Times, The Economist, and Le Monde, among others.
