Francesco Giavazzi

Francesco Giavazzi is Emeritus Professor of Economics at Bocconi University. He was Visiting Professor at MIT from 1999 to 2012, and is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) and a Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR).

Giavazzi served as Deputy Director General of the Italian Treasury (1991–1994) and as Economic Adviser to Prime Minister Mario Draghi during the design of Italy's National Recovery and Resilience Plan (2021). He was a member of the Council of Economic Advisers to the Italian Prime Minister (1998–2000), adviser for the Italian government's Spending Review (2012), and a member of the Group of Economic Policy Advisers to the Presidents of the European Commission (2000–2010). He has also advised the IMF and Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

In 1991, he co-founded IGIER, the economics research institute established jointly by Bocconi, CEPR, and NBER, and served as its first Director. He was co-editor of the European Economic Review (1991–1999) and is a regular editorialist for Corriere della Sera. His books include Austerity: When It Works and When It Doesn't (with A. Alesina and C. Favero, Princeton University Press, 2019).

Giavazzi holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano and a PhD in Economics from MIT.
