Francesco Decarolis

Francesco Decarolis is Full Professor of Economics at Bocconi University, where he holds the ENEL Foundation Chair in Competitiveness and Transition. A leading scholar in industrial organisation and competition in digital markets, he is a Research Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) and serves as Associate Editor of Econometrica and The Review of Economic Studies. His work has been recognised with both an ERC Starting Grant and an ERC Consolidator Grant.

Decarolis earned his BA from Bocconi University and his MA and PhD in Economics from the University of Chicago. Before returning to Europe, he spent nearly fifteen years in the United States, conducting research and teaching at several universities. He has held visiting positions at Stanford, Columbia, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Chicago, and in Spring 2026 served as the Agnelli Chair of Italian Culture at Peking University, giving lectures across China and Singapore.

His research spans industrial organisation, competition policy, market design, public procurement, and the regulation of digital platforms. He has produced influential work on digital advertising, auctions, corruption, collusion, and algorithmic competition, contributing to academic debate and policy development. Over the past fifteen years, he has also advised European and Italian public institutions and collaborated with major private-sector organisations.
