Andreu Mas-Colell

Andreu Mas-Colell is Professor Emeritus of Economics at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) and Emeritus Research Professor at the Barcelona School of Economics (BSE), which he founded. He has chaired the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) since 2016.

His research has been central to mathematical economics and general equilibrium theory, spanning over 120 papers on topics from abstract equilibrium theory and financial market structure to pricing policy for public firms. He is the author of The Theory of General Economic Equilibrium: A Differentiable Approach (Cambridge University Press, 1985) and co-author, with M. Whinston and J. Green, of the graduate textbook Microeconomic Theory (Oxford University Press, 1995), widely used in doctoral programmes worldwide. He served as chief editor of the Journal of Mathematical Economics and of Econometrica, and as President of the Econometric Society (1993) and the European Economic Association (2006).

He was Professor of Economics and Mathematics at UC Berkeley (1972–80) and Professor of Economics at Harvard University (1981–96) before joining UPF. He served as Secretary General of the ERC (2009–10), Minister for Universities and Research of the Government of Catalonia (2000–03), and Minister of Economy and Knowledge (2010–16).

He is a Foreign Associate of the US National Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and Foreign Honorary Member of the American Economic Association. He has received the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award (2009), the Pascual Madoz National Research Prize (2006), and the Rey Juan Carlos I Prize in Economics (1988).

He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Minnesota and honorary doctorates from the Universities of Chicago, Toulouse, Alicante, HEC Paris, and the Universidad Nacional del Sur.
