Alice Evans

Alice Evans is a Faculty Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research and was previously a Senior Lecturer in the Social Science of Development at King's College London. Her research focuses on what drives (or obstructs) progress towards gender equality.

She is writing The Great Gender Divergence, forthcoming with Princeton University Press, which examines why all societies have become more gender equal, and why some have progressed further than others. She has published in journals including World Development, the Review of International Political Economy, and Gender & Society.

Evans has also held positions at the University of Cambridge, the London School of Economics and Political Science, Yale University, and Harvard University. She has received the British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship and the Leverhulme Fellowship.

Her work has been covered by the Economist, Financial Times, the BBC, the New York Times, the Guardian, and the Wall Street Journal. She hosts the podcast Rocking Our Priors. In 2025, Project Syndicate named her a "Forward Thinker."

Evans holds a PhD from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
